Well-written safety plans that sit on a self and collect dust are useless. To be truly effective at enhancing safety and security, schools must reinforce their safety planning through various staff development training workshops. CLPS training workshops are second to none!
Staff Development Training Workshops include:
BUILDING-LEVEL CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING
Most states have mandates that require schools to establish Building-Level Crisis Response Teams capable of responding to a variety of emergencies. It is important that these teams are properly trained and prepared to respond to crisis situations affecting their school. School emergencies can be multifaceted and require several different responses. CLPS will train your team to effectively cope with crisis. Our training methodology has been designed by our school safety experts who have extensive backgrounds in school administration, education and law enforcement. We teach “best practices” techniques, centered on standard crisis management protocol. This full-day workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
CRITICAL INCIDENT DEBRIEFING TRAINING
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is defined as an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more traumatic events that threatened or caused great physical harm. Symptoms may include anxiety, impaired judgment, confusion, detachment, and depression. If a major incident occurs that affects the students and staff at your school, how prepared are you to cope with the aftermath? Critical Incident Debriefing Training is team-based intervention to assist persons who may be or become traumatized after exposure to a traumatic event. This training is not designed to replace treatment by mental health professionals, but rather assist with the healing process in the early intervention stages. This full-day workshop consists of lecture, role playing and open discussion.
SCHOOL THREAT ASSESSMENT TEAM TRAINING
How prepared is your school at preventing a planned violent attack by a student? According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Secret Service entitled, “Safe School Initiative Study,” schools that utilize threat assessments can prevent targeted attacks by students before they occur. Participants in this workshop will be instructed how to work in multidisciplinary teams called “Threat Assessment Teams,” within a school setting. Participants will be taught how to identify threats, assess their viability and manage them appropriately. Information about implementing a standardized threat assessment system into your school district will be discussed. This half-day workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
STUDENT DE-ESCALATION TRAINING
Does your school staff know how to properly defuse potentially dangerous situations between students? These situations can range from a verbal dispute to a physical confrontation. What is most important in attempting to defuse potentially dangerous situations between students is SAFETY! That safety includes the safety of the engaged students, the intervening staff and any others who may be present. Communication experts agree that the majority of human communication is non-verbal. That being true, how staff members approach and speak to students is a key factor in their efforts at effectively and safely defusing situations. Participants will receive training in verbal and non-verbal communication, safe intervention techniques and situation management. This half-day workshop consists of lecture, role playing and tabletop exercises.
SCHOOL LOCKDOWN EMERGENCY TRAINING
In the event of a school emergency, administrators and staff members must know how to best protect the children entrusted to their care. Establishing and practicing emergency procedures is crucial to accomplishing this often challenging task. A variety of internal and external events can occur that will cause schools to experience an emergency. Some of these emergency situations will warrant a Lockdown. Events, such as: Armed Intruders, Active Shooters, Weather Related Emergencies, Natural Disasters, Hazardous Materials, Escaped Prisoners and WMD Attacks. This workshop will examine some of these emergencies and the appropriate actions that should be taken if they occur. Written recommended Lockdown Procedures will be provided to participants. This mini-workshop will include lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
STUDENT BULLYING PREVENTION TRAINING
Schools around the country are constantly facing the issue of student bullying. The old motto, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me,” has long since been proven not true. In fact, studies have shown that students who are bullied are more likely to be aggressive, violent and even be arrested for criminal offenses. A major challenge facing schools today is how to best prevent student bullying. Experts agree that early intervention and continuous reinforcement is crucial at preventing bullying in schools. During this workshop, participants will be provided with nationally recognized, state-of-the-art anti-bullying information, which will enable them to respond to all stages of bullying. The rising concern of “Cyber-Bullying,” will also be included. This mini-workshop consists of lecture, role playing and open discussion.
YOUTH GANGS PREVENTION TRAINING
Youth violence and gangs is a rising trend in schools across America. This formerly thought to be “urban school problem,” is no longer confined in our major metropolitan cities. In fact, gang activity is increasing rapidly in suburban and rural schools. This increasing problem must be dealt with head on in order to maintain safe learning environments for our children. During this workshop, participants will be made aware of the origins of youth gangs. Participants will be taught ways to recognize the signs of gang activities, and advised appropriate intervention techniques to deal with this problem. This mini-workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
SCHOOL HOMELAND SECURITY TRAINING
Are schools likely targets of future terrorist attacks? Will schools be affected by future major events, such as natural or man-made disasters? Unfortunately, experts believe that schools, although classified as “soft targets,” are at high risk of future terrorism. Additionally, we have seen a dramatic increase in natural disasters in recent years. Whether an event is man-made or natural, schools could significantly be affected in a negative way if they are not properly prepared. This workshop is not designed to cause unnecessary fear or alarm. On the contrary, it is designed to increase awareness with the ultimate goal of better preparing our schools to cope with the possibility of a major incident. This mini-workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
SCHOOL MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING
How well trained is your staff at detecting and reporting child abuse and neglect? Schools today face serious liabilities if their staff fails to properly report a child that is suspected of abuse or neglect. However, as stated in Social Service Law 419: “Any mandated reporter that in good faith makes a report to the State Central Registry is immune from criminal and civil liability.” School staff must be able to detect and report abuse or neglect in a timely manner to best safeguard the student victims and protect themselves and the school from liability. This workshop is provided by former prosecutors and law enforcement detectives with extensive experience investigating child abuse cases. This mini-workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
POLICE RESPONSE TO DYNAMIC INCIDENTS TRAINING
Anytime the police are called to a school campus for an emergency, it is important for school staff to understand how the police will likely respond to different incidents. Having this knowledge will enable school staff to know what their responsibilities will be in the event of an emergency on campus. Dynamic incidents include a variety of situations that warrant police response. Some of these incidents include, but are not limited to: Active School Shooters, Armed Intruders, Bomb Threats, Evacuations, Lockdowns and other emergency situations. This workshop will provide school staff with standard police response methods to a number of dynamic incidents and instruct them as to what they should do to best safeguard students during various incidents. This mini-workshop consists of lecture, tabletop exercises and open discussion.
Workshops are presented in mini-sessions (1-2 hours), half-day sessions (up to 4 hours), and full-day sessions (up to 6 hours). Our workshop may be adjusted to meet the needs of your specific school. Multi-day workshops, weekend and evening instruction can be arranged upon request. Contact us to find out more information on how we can customize a program for you.
